To help the incoming freshmen of Dublin International College in 2024 adapt to university life and study more efficiently, Professor Henry McLoughlin, Vice Dean of Teaching at Dublin International College, delivered a lecture on "Maximizing Classroom Learning" and " Intentional Reading" on October 22nd, 2024, which focuses on strategies for university classroom learning.

Professor McLoughlin pointed out that classroom learning is of great importance in stimulating students' interest in a subject and enhancing their motivation to learn, but at the same time, it faces challenges such as teacher's speaking pace, limited memory, and differences in teaching levels. In response to these challenges, Professor McLoughlin proposed six effective methods for actively participating in class. First, prepare for class, including arriving at the classroom early, reviewing notes and slides, and raising questions. Second, build an information structure by reinforcing information based on the opening and summary. Third, identify and categorize the importance of information. Fourth, take effective notes by handwriting. Fifth, concentrate by asking questions. Sixth, review notes promptly after class. In addition, Professor McLoughlin emphasized the importance of pre-class preparation, as it helps students quickly engage in the lecture and listen to the lesson with a specific focus.

Students said that the lecture benefited them a lot. They not only learnt some practical skills but also realized their limitations of the current learning. In the future, they will apply the new strategies to future classes and strive to improve their academic performance.
